Ki-Weon Seo and his team are noticing a noteworthy trend, with the earth tilting at an accelerated speed between 1993 and 2010. There are a few reasons for this, and they are all very problematic heading into the future – with climate change and rising sea levels still a major cause for concern.

Let’s take a closer look at what the findings suggest, and how other users reacted to the recent paper. As expected, some individuals on X expected this problematic tilt.

A research team consisting of Ki-Weon Seo, Dongryeol Ryu, Jooyoung Eom, Taewhan Jeon, Jae-Seung Kim, Kookhyoun Youm, Jianli Chen, and Clark R. Wilson, released a study, ‘Drift of Earth’s Pole Confirms Groundwater Depletion as a Significant Contributor to Global Sea Level Rise.’

The fascinating findings revealed that the earth has tilted 31.5 inches, an alarming statistic that shouldn’t happen. Ki-Weon Seo, the study lead, believes the pumping of groundwater is a major reason as to why, equating to the rising sea levels.

“Earth’s rotational pole actually changes a lot. Our study shows that among climate-related causes, the redistribution of groundwater actually has the largest impact on the drift of the rotational pole.”

How does water impact the planet’s tilt? Water impacts the distribution of mass. Seo added, “Like adding a tiny bit of weight to a spinning top,” authors say, “the Earth spins a little differently as water is moved around.”

As expected, the study lead believes the latest data is a cause for concern, especially looking ahead.

“I’m very glad to find the unexplained cause of the rotation pole drift,” Seo says. “On the other hand, as a resident of Earth and a father, I’m concerned and surprised to see that pumping groundwater is another source of sea-level rise.”

Seo concluded that the study is especially key “for understanding continent-scale water storage variations.”

What Happens If The Earth Moves Too Fast?

In short, this would alter the planet’s shape, while affecting gravity. Days would be a lot shorter, while weather patterns could also completely alter. Ocean currents and the ecosystems would also be affected.
