A groundbreaking study from the University of Cambridge suggests that a lack of exercise may be twice as deadly as obesity when it comes to early mortality.
The research, which analyzed over 334,000 Europeans with an average age of 50, found that individuals who engaged in even a small amount of physical activity—like a brisk 20-minute walk each day—were between 16% and 30% less likely to die prematurely compared to those who remained completely sedentary.
Even more compelling, the study revealed that while those at a healthy weight benefited the most from daily movement, even obese individuals saw significant improvements in their lifespan simply by incorporating light exercise into their routines.
How Physical Inactivity Compares to Obesity in Mortality Risk
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Exercise, examined height, weight, exercise levels, and waist circumference of participants between 1992 and 2000.
Over the next 12 years, researchers tracked their health outcomes and discovered a sobering truth: 21,438 participants had died.
A closer look at the data revealed that one of the strongest common factors among those who lived longer was that they weren’t completely inactive.
In contrast, nearly a quarter of the participants admitted to leading entirely sedentary lives, meaning they had desk jobs and did no physical activity in their free time.
The findings showed that, of the 9.2 million deaths occurring in Europe annually, around 676,000 could be directly attributed to physical inactivity, while only 337,000 could be linked to obesity.
This suggests that not moving at all is nearly twice as deadly as carrying excess weight.

One of the most striking takeaways from the study is how minimal effort can yield major health benefits.
The researchers found that even burning as little as 90 to 110 calories per day—which is achievable with a quick 20-minute walk—significantly reduced the risk of early death.
“This is a simple message: just a small amount of physical activity each day could have substantial health benefits for people who are physically inactive,” said lead researcher Ulf Ekelund in a press release.
Of course, while 20 minutes of walking is better than nothing, the more movement, the better.
Public health experts still encourage individuals to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, but the study emphasizes that even a low level of activity can still provide significant benefits.

“Helping people to lose weight can be a real challenge,” said Nick Wareham, director of the Cambridge Medical Research Council.
“And whilst we should continue to aim at reducing population levels of obesity, public health interventions that encourage people to make small but achievable changes in physical activity can have significant health benefits and may be easier to achieve and maintain.“
